Before you begin
This tutorial uses the actual GramFather interface with fictional teaching data and AI-assisted narration. Sample counts and contacts demonstrate the controls; they are not customer results. Check your plan’s feature allowance and keep the Chrome extension connected for browser actions. AI provider usage is separate where applicable.

Set up replies to comments on your posts
Turn interest on your Instagram posts into useful conversations. GramFather Comment AI reads new comments on your own recent posts, classifies them, drafts replies in your voice, and can follow up with interested leads. This tutorial covers the full setup and operating workflow. We use an isolated tutorial account and fictional examples. No Instagram comment, like, DM, or paid AI request is sent.
Prepare the plan, browser and Instagram account
Comment replies is available on Growth, Pro, and eligible trials. Install and sign in to the GramFather Chrome extension, keep Chrome open with Instagram signed in, and select the Instagram account whose posts you want to answer. The extension reads comments and performs approved Instagram actions. Each account keeps its own Comment AI settings.
Connect the AI provider and Comments model
In AI models, connect your OpenRouter account and choose a model for Comments. Provider usage is billed separately. If you want the AI to see a post’s photo, enable Look at the post image there. Without a working connection, cards use a best guess and wait for review. Once AI is connected, Rewrite with AI can create a fresh draft for those cards.
Give drafts your business context
Open Brand voice and add accurate information about your business, audience, offers, and preferred tone. Comment AI also uses answers saved in Autoresponder, Knowledge. Keep those facts current and review generated wording before sending. The linked Brand voice and Knowledge tutorials cover their fields, examples, sharing, and practical limits.
Open Comment replies
Under Replies in the sidebar, click Comment replies. The heading says Autoresponder, Comments. DMs and messages and Comments at the top switch between the two channels. Comment AI handles comments on your posts; the DM autoresponder has its own settings and queue. Select the correct Instagram account before changing anything.
Choose a review-first workflow
Under How comment replies are sent, Review first is selected by default. This holds written public replies and DMs for approval in the inbox. Negative comments always wait for review in either mode. Comment likes follow their own setting: Love comments can receive likes automatically even in Review first. Read that setting when choosing your workflow.
Choose whether leads receive DM drafts
Also DM interested leads starts on. When the score reaches your threshold, a DM can be drafted alongside the public reply. Turn it off if you want public replies only; the confirmation says Lead DM follow-ups disabled. This controls new lead DM drafts. The settings tutorial explains threshold, AI wording, personalized templates, and eligibility.
Review defaults before enabling the feature
Click Settings at the top or Tweak settings first on the setup card. Review who receives replies, like behavior, emoji handling, the hourly cap, lead threshold, DM writer, watched posts, and ignore words. Click Save settings to apply changes. Defaults include ten public replies per hour, lead threshold sixty, and a seven-day post window. The separate settings video covers every option and default.
Turn on Comment AI for this account
Click Turn on comment replies on the setup card. The top switch changes to On and the confirmation says Comment AI is on. We demonstrate this locally with no connected worker. On a live account, the feature begins watching recent posts through the extension. Switching on Comment AI does not connect the extension or enable your separate automation setting by itself.
Resolve extension and automation warnings
Read the warnings beneath the mode card. If the extension is not running or is signed out, click Connect it and finish connecting. If automation is off, comments can still be read and drafted, but approved actions wait. Click Turn it on to open Automation and safety, enable the master, and save when ready. Sending also follows your active hours and account limits.
Understand which comments are picked up
Keep the connected browser running. Comment AI checks about every five minutes and watches the twelve most recent posts published inside your chosen window, seven days by default. The first check only picks up comments from the last forty-eight hours. Waiting on your first comment can simply mean nothing eligible has arrived. Check the account, post age, extension, and watched window before troubleshooting further.
Review the first draft and its reason
Incoming comments appear as cards with their original text, post context, type, lead score, reason, and drafted reply. Open Needs review, read each draft, edit it, and choose Approve and send when it is ready. Alex’s card is an illustrative lead example. The inbox tutorial demonstrates editing, DMs, likes, bulk selection, cancellation, filtering, keyboard shortcuts, and failed actions.
Verify delivery and find leads in the CRM
Approved actions say Queued to send until the extension completes them. Live delivery changes the state to Replied, DM sent, or Handled, with Posted or Sent timestamps for the completed text. Commenters classified as leads are added to your CRM; a person icon beside a username identifies a pipeline contact. The worker window logs Comment AI activity, including picked-up comments and replies. Our sample queue is fictional.
Choose automatic replies when ready
To let eligible replies go out automatically, choose Automatic replies under How comment replies are sent. The badge changes to Autopilot. Eligible public replies and lead DMs enter the queue inside your limits, while negative comments and drafts the AI could not write still wait for review. We preview Automatic replies with lead DMs off, then return to Review first. These changes affect only local tutorial state.
Understand the reply and DM limits
At most one public reply per person on a post is allowed each day, or two inside a thread. After that, the DM channel can take over. Lead DMs are limited to one per person per week and exclude people you are already chatting with. The hourly reply cap also works alongside account-wide comment limits; DMs count as new DMs and likes as likes. Instagram actions run one at a time.
Know the text and classification boundaries
Public replies start with the commenter’s username. AI drafts have links and hashtags removed and stay under three hundred characters. You can edit a public reply up to one thousand characters, and DMs up to nine hundred. Spam and ignore-word matches go to Ignored. Negative comments wait for you. Drafts the AI could not write always require review, even with automatic replies selected.
Read the seven-day and thirty-day stats
The strip shows Comments seen and how many wait on you; Replied with liked and queued counts; Leads found with the top post; and DMs sent. Switch between seven and thirty days on the right. This changes the reporting window, not which posts the feature watches. Our eight comments and two leads are fictional demonstration data. Use the inbox for individual results and reasons.
Turn comment reading and sending off
To pause this feature, click the top switch so it says Off. The page confirms Comment AI is off and shows the setup card again. Nothing is read or sent by Comment AI while it is off. An approval can still be saved, with a message to turn Comment AI on to send it. The settings remain available for review.
Use the warning and error messages
If Instagram pushes back, sending pauses until the displayed time and the queue remains saved. For repeated pauses, lower the hourly public reply cap and account comment limits. For AI best-guess cards, verify OpenRouter and the Comments model. If an action did not send, read its error before retrying. A send interrupted without confirmation is not blindly sent again. For a page-load error, use Try again, reload, and check your connection.
Build your own comment-to-conversation workflow
Prepare your connection and business context, choose the review mode and follow-up settings, then check the first real comment and delivery result. Use the settings and inbox tutorials for the detailed controls. The description links to those videos, the software, written setup guide, full demo, and playlist. New users can start the free trial through the website and review current plan scope, pricing, and renewal terms.
