Calculate net growth and percentage growth
Net growth = ending follower count − starting follower count.
Growth rate = net growth ÷ starting follower count × 100.
If you start at 800 and end at 840, net growth is 40 and the growth rate is 5%. If you start at 800 and end at 780, net growth is −20 and the rate is −2.5%. These are illustrative calculations, not product benchmarks.
When the starting count is zero, the percentage is undefined. Report the absolute gain instead. Keep both counts with every percentage so a small starting audience does not make a change look larger than it is.
Keep different metrics separate
| Metric | Calculation or meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Net growth | End count minus start count | Overall audience change. |
| New followers | People observed joining during the period | Acquisition activity. |
| Unfollowers | People observed leaving during the period | Audience turnover. |
| Growth rate | Net growth divided by starting followers, times 100 | Relative change over a stated period. |
| Churn rate | Unfollowers divided by starting followers, times 100 | Losses relative to the starting audience. |
List scans and count snapshots can have different timing. Use the same account, time zone and reporting window when you compare them. A person who leaves and returns can also make event counts differ from the net count change.
Start tracking in GramFather
- Select the correct Instagram account in the portal’s account switcher.
- Keep Chrome open with the GramFather extension connected and Instagram signed in to that account.
- Under Insights in the sidebar, click Followers.
- Opening the page queues the first scan. If Run initial scan appears, click it.
- Keep Chrome available until the scan finishes. If it closes, the scan resumes when the connected browser is available again.
- Read Followers, New followers, Unfollowers, Net growth and Churn rate. The Date range defaults to 30 days; choose 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or All time.
- Use Table on a chart for exact recorded values.
Scans are read-only. Tracking begins with your initial scan; the first list establishes a baseline rather than reconstructing historical follower events. The page does not display the percentage growth-rate formula above as a separate top-level metric; calculate it from your start and end counts.
Understand refreshes, defaults and scan gaps
Refresh beside the date range reloads the displayed data. Refresh followers starts a full list scan. After the initial scan, Scan now offers Daily check, Full rescan and Scan who I follow.
Open Tracking settings to review the account’s controls. Automatic tracking and Daily check default to on. Full rescan defaults to Auto — every day, all account sizes. Scan who you follow defaults to Once a week. Add every new follower to the CRM defaults to off. The daily follower digest defaults to on after the initial scan. Click Save settings to save changes.
If a scan remains queued, check the extension connection, automation status and the signed-in Instagram account. A gap in the daily chart means no count was recorded for that day. Estimated unfollowers marked ≈ become named after a full rescan; keep the estimate label in your report.
Interpret campaign credit and choose the next experiment
“What brought them in” credits new followers to the last campaign touch within 14 days. This is a product attribution rule, not proof that the campaign alone caused a follow. Someone may have seen a Reel, a collaboration and a campaign before following.
Review equal periods and record major changes to content or distribution. If growth rises alongside relevant enquiries, keep testing the useful pattern. If follower gains do not lead to relevant conversations, revisit your audience research and profile promise. Use the marketing metrics guide for the business side of the review.
Your questions, answered
What is a good Instagram follower growth rate?
There is no single target appropriate for every account. Compare equal periods for your own account, considering its starting size, content, promotions and audience fit.
Why is percentage growth undefined when I start at zero?
The formula divides by the starting follower count. Division by zero is undefined, so report the number of followers gained and establish a nonzero baseline for later percentage comparisons.
Does GramFather show historical unfollowers from before setup?
The initial scan establishes who follows you when tracking begins. Later scans detect changes; it does not reconstruct a complete history from before that baseline.
Does refreshing the page start a scan?
The small Refresh control reloads data. Refresh followers starts a full scan, while Scan now provides individual scan options after the initial scan.
